Reading the book once (after skimming it) will teach you the style, after which it can be selected from the unarmed combat menu (default: _). Reading the book again has no effect, and unarmed combat styles cannot be taught to NPCs (they are "uninterested"); however, it is a good idea to keep a copy around for future survivors.
