Mechanics is an important skill, even after the apocalypse. Not only does it increase your chances of lockpicking a door with literally a piece of metal (improvised lockpick) but it also allows you to repair non-fabric items and vehicles! This industry covers practical uses, repairing, and vehicles.

Practical uses

Most of the time you need to get into a house by lockpicking it silently. Mechanics skill improves the chance (very slightly) but it's often preferable to get better tools like a lockpick kit or the fingerpick. It also covers prying things open and a few crafting recipes.

Repairing

With a soldering iron, you can repair and reinforce items made out of metal, kevlar, and plastic. It improves the armour if it's a piece of clothing and the damage if it's a weapon. Squeezing efficiency is very important.

Vehicles

With more mechanics skill, you can repair more advanced parts, install more advanced parts, and craft more advanced parts. It's important to keep your vehicle in the best condition, from the lowliest bicycle to a massive death mobile, neither can survive without repairs.
